# reflect & reset · pilot schools wanted

Reflection that changes behaviour, not just a worksheet in isolation.

Reflect & Reset is a short, evidence-informed course for pupils who keep getting it wrong. Forty-minute modules teach and rehearse the behaviour you want to see, and a 12-week coaching course helps pupils who struggle to manage their emotions. Every module comes with a quiz that checks their thinking.

Your friend whispers a joke while the teacher is explaining the task.

Thinking spotted

Believes small, quiet disruption doesn’t count. It still pulls you and the people around you off the task.

Fix it

Write the words you could say to your friend at break to share the joke without getting into trouble.

// why it matters

Most suspensions are for behaviour that can be taught.

Persistent disruption, rudeness to staff and fighting make up most suspensions in England. Time out of lessons alone rarely changes them. Pupils need to learn and practise a different response.

913,000

suspensions in English schools in 2024/25.

52%

of suspension reasons were persistent disruptive behaviour, the largest single reason.

Year 9

had the highest suspension rate of any year group.

// how it works

One cycle for every referral.

The course runs as six core sessions over three weeks, with targeted modules matched to the pupil’s referral and eight weeks of follow-up.

  1. 01 know

    Understand the pattern

    A short intake looks at when, where and why things go wrong, and sets two personal targets.

  2. 02 rehearse

    Teach and practise

    Forty-minute modules with scenarios and role-play, because rehearsal is what makes new behaviour stick.

  3. 03 repair

    Put it right

    A prepared restorative conversation with the person affected, when the pupil is ready.

  4. 04 follow up

    Keep it going

    A daily report card and weekly mentor check-in for eight weeks after the sessions end.

// the modules

Fourteen modules, each matched to a reason for referral.

Every module follows the same 40 minutes: hook, understand, rehearse, apply. Pupils take the one or two that fit why they were referred.

A quick reset after an incident, or a term of coaching.

// regulation coaching · 12 weeks

Regulate first. Then relate. Then reason.

Coaches calm first, connect second and problem-solve last, so no pupil is asked to reflect while still dysregulated. Unit 1 builds self-regulation; Unit 2 applies it to relationships; week 12 brings both into each pupil’s plan.

// sample module

Module 1: Ready to Learn

For pupils who talk over others, shout out, distract classmates or are slow to settle. It targets the most common reason for suspension in England.

  1. 5 min

    Hook: the lost minutes

    Work out how much learning a class loses to small disruptions in one week.

  2. 10 min

    Understand: what “ready” looks like

    Why low-level disruption adds up, and the routines for the first five minutes of a lesson.

  3. 15 min

    Rehearse: lesson starts and switches

    Scenario choices and role-play of settling, asking to speak and ignoring distractions.

  4. 10 min

    Apply: my hardest lesson

    Pin down the lesson and moment where it goes wrong, and write a “next time I will” plan.

// built on the evidence

Designed around what the research says works.

Practise, don’t just talk

Behaviour interventions with role-play and rehearsal show the strongest effects in the EEF Toolkit.

Short and frequent

Social and emotional learning works best in sessions of up to 45 minutes, twice a week, with bigger gains at secondary (EEF).

Tailored to the pupil

The EEF’s behaviour guidance recommends personalised approaches, such as report cards, for pupils that whole-school systems don’t reach.

Ready for internal suspension

The DfE wants internal suspension to be short and structured, with real learning and reflection. Each module fits a timetabled slot.
