Part of the KS3 English curriculum.
KS3 English Year 8: Crafting the Short Story is a step-by-step online learn guide for Key Stage 3 pupils in Years 7 to 9. It covers what makes a short story? Form and focus, the Tell-Tale Heart: the unreliable narrator, the Monkey's Paw: foreshadowing and the three wishes, structuring a story: openings, shifts and endings, characterisation: showing rather than telling, dialogue that works: punctuation and purpose and drafting and redrafting a short story, then brings it all together with mixed retrieval and unit challenge.
There are 23 short steps of about 15 minutes (roughly 6 hours of learning), each made of bite-size explanations with key words, tables and examples, and every bite-size is followed by an activity you check straight away. Key terms include Short story, Exposition, Narrator, First-person narrator, Foreshadowing, Pattern of three, In medias res, Flashback, Characterisation, Showing, Dialogue and Speech marks.
